Life Skills and Independence Programs

Our life skills and independence programs are aimed at supporting participants with a disability to lead to a more independent life. Activities are designed to build confidence and self-esteem while teaching important life and social skills.

 
 
 
 

My life Program

The My Life Program assists participants to build social skills, confidence and self-esteem. At the conclusion of each program the group celebrates their achievements by inviting friends and family for a high tea and graduation ceremony.

Duration:

Up to 4 days per week for 47 weeks

Location:

Acacia Ridge
Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday)
Stones Corner (Monday)

Group Size:

8 to 10 participants in each group

Cost:

Free (participants need to meet certain criteria)

Eligibility:

Ages 18 to 65. This program is block funded by the Queensland Government. (see our eligibility form for further information). Participants registered with NDIS may also be eligible for this program.

Program topics:

Life skills/healthy living/safety/community engagement/setting plans and goals/cooking (these topics are only an example of the program content)

 
 
 
 

My Time Life Skills and Independence (LSI) Program:

3 days per week

Acacia Ridge

Group Size:

5 to 10 participants per group

Eligibility:

Ages 18 to 25 years. Participants must have individualised funding.
Participants registered with NDIS may also be eligible for this program.

My Time Special Interest Day Programs:

This program covers life skills topics with a focus on client input and engagement. Activities are geared towards an interest shared by a number of participants. It opens to all persons who have a disability.

Duration:

1 day per week (min of 4 hours) /45 weeks per year

Group Size:

5 to 10 participants per group

Eligibility:

Participants must have individualised funding.
Participants registered with NDIS may also be eligible for this program.

Nature and Animal Care/Foundation Skills/Work Readiness/Creative Minds/Handyman/Green Army/Girl Power/Men’s Club (these topics are only an example of the program content)

My Future Program:

This is a one on one program, to support individual participants to identify their goals and aspirations and work towards achieving them. The program can also support clients who are moving through our other programs and are ready to become more independent and practise the skills that they have learnt

Who can register for our Life Skills programs?

  • The person must have a diagnosed mental health or intellectual disability
  • Be assessed and referred by an intake officer from Disability Services
  • Be aged from 18 – 65 years (My Life) or 18 – 25 years (My Time)
  • Be able to self-care (including toileting, medication, feeding etc)
  • Be comfortable in a group setting
  • Express a desire to improve their life skills
  • Accept their obligations to attend all classes
